Charlie grew up in the foothill communities of Los Angeles and entered the architectural profession working summers in the early '70's while attending the University of Oregon. Upon graduating with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1974 he moved to San Diego and became focused on educational work and other public institutional projects. Charlie moved to Northern California in 1978 and established his own business in 1981 as a sole proprietor located in Placerville and created Murray & Downs AIA in 1985. In 2007 Murray & Downs merged with Oshima and Yee Architects of Sacramento to form ANOVA Architects, Inc. The firm further evolved into Architectural Nexus serving primarily the Western United States through offices in Sacramento and Salt Lake City with specialists in healthcare, educational, civic, municipal, federal, and other public institutional projects.
Charlie is a Sr. Fellow with the American Leadership Forum, a board member of the El Dorado Community Foundation and a board member of the Western Slope Boys and Girls Club. Charlie and his wife Nancy live in the Apple Hill area of El Dorado County where they enjoy their garden and the outdoor recreation provided in the Tahoe Sierra.
