Listos California Emergency Preparedness Campaign
Overview
In 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom and the State Legislature appropriated more than $50 million to fund the Listos California Program. This program – based at the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) – focuses on delivering emergency preparedness, response, and recovery information and tools to diverse and vulnerable populations in high-hazard areas throughout California.
Listos California’s mission is to ensure every Californian, regardless of age, ability, income or language, receives culturally competent education to prepare for natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, and wildfires. Since its inception in 2019, Listos Califonia has engaged millions of Californians with low incomes, disabilities, language barriers, older adults, and other highly vulnerable populations with culturally and linguistically appropriate support through a grass-roots, people-centered approach. The program is implemented through a rich network of community-based organizations, Tribal governments, and Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs), which are able to reach targeted audiences through focused and interactive strategies. By delivering actionable information and tools with cultural relevance and tact, the campaign ensures California communities are prepared to respond and recover in the event of a natural disaster.
Valley Vision serves as the backbone organization for Listos California, helping support and coordinate the work of creative, strategic, and programmatic partners in the development and dissemination of culturally appropriate, in-language educational tools and assets. We aim to amplify the success of all campaign partners, helping them empower vulnerable individuals and build community resilience to the disasters that may confront our state.
