Project: COMMUNITY HEALTH NEEDS ASSESSMENTS 2013

What is the goal?

Community Health Needs Assessments involve measuring and understanding the health status of populations, paying close attention to the most vulnerable community members. These assessments are conducted so that nonprofit hospitals can focus their charitable programs on the most pressing health needs.

Why is this important?

Communities are happier, healthier, and more productive when all residents have easy access to medical care, fresh fruits and vegetables, and safe places to play and exercise. Under current law nonprofit hospitals are required to demonstrate that their charitable programs address the high priority health needs in their territories. Priority health needs are things that make it challenging for community members to lead healthy lives, such as limited access to healthy food, transportation issues, or difficulty being seen by a doctor.

What is Valley Vision doing about it?

Valley Vision is examining health and identifying health needs in communities on behalf of a number of hospitals within Northern California. The organization provides expert research skills that are balanced with a strong commitment to drawing attention to critical unmet health needs. Valley Vision folds together many kinds of information– including stories from people struggling to get care and detailed health and population data– to help hospitals make effective plans to take action toward improving health. In many assessments, Valley Vision builds or strengthens partnerships between hospitals that cover similar territories in order to achieve a more coordinated approach to examining health needs and developing plans for improving community health.

When?

Valley Vision has been conducting Community Health Needs Assessments since 2007. More than 20 hospital studies are underway and due for completion in 2013.
