The Old Sacramento Historic District is a national landmark that attracts international visitors and locals year-round. Whether it’s to visit the California Rail Road Museum, visit fine restaurants or sample from countless barrels of saltwater taffy, we all have fond memories of this riverfront destination.
Valley Vision is working with the City of Sacramento, California State Parks, business groups and local property owners and merchants in the historic district to help elevate the District. This effort, championed by Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg and California Secretary of Resources John Laird, will ensure that smart investments are made in keeping with the renaissance underway in the surrounding downtown and on both sides of the river.
what is the goal?
The goal is to unify stakeholders in the District by creating one cohesive organization with all stakeholders at the table that is capable of:
- Preserving and promoting the historic content;
- Overcoming the inherent challenges associated with operating a historic park district with many goals;
- Achieving redevelopment and economic viability and growth;
- Increasing tourism and the visitor experience; and
- Being a cornerstone of riverfront development.
why is this important?
This District is home to Sacramento’s deepest roots and a place where history comes to life, combining the artifacts of the past with experiences and opportunities unique to Sacramento’s future. Now is the time for the City, the State, and members of the business community to come together to support a shared vision and put it quickly to action.
what is Valley Vision’s role?
Valley Vision has conducted interviews with the City of Sacramento, California State Parks, and property owners in the historic district to better understand their aspirations and the operational challenges inherent in a place as important and complex as Old Sacramento. Our aim is to mix these insights with research from other successful historic and tourism districts across the US and Canada to forge a cohesive, inclusive organization capable of delivering the greatest impact in the shortest amount of time.
how does this improve people’s lives?
Old Sacramento’s history and visitor experience should be a world-renowned, family-friendly destination that draws many hundreds of thousands yearly. Sacramento and our region can tell its story about its pioneering past and provide a unique riverfront experience that is on par with the billions in reinvestment happening in the urban core.
Valley Vision was hired by the project stakeholders to launch this effort in early 2018.
